What is a stock heat map?

A stock heat map is a visual dashboard of the market where each box represents a stock or sector. The size of the box usually reflects market cap or volume, and the colour shows performance – green for up, red for down.

Why it matters to traders

  • Instant market read. In seconds, you can see which sectors are leading or lagging.
  • Find relative strength. Strong stocks in a weak sector – or vice versa – often become A-plus ideas.
  • Gauge risk-on vs risk-off. When everything is red or green, you know overall risk appetite has shifted.
